News: Kl, George Town Included in Top 100 Most Liveable Places for Asian Expats

Jan 30, 2019

Many cities in Malaysia saw an improvement in their rankings, particularly George Town in Penang and Kuala Lumpur, which made it to the top 100 of the world’s most liveable locations for Asian expatriates, reported the Borneo Post.

According to ECA International’s Location Ratings Survey, Kuala Lumpur rose from the 126th spot in the ranking to the 98th place, while George Town slightly surpassed the capital and claimed the 97th spot.

“Both Malaysia and Thailand continue to develop and improve their infrastructure, resulting in steady improvements in their liveability scores in recent years,” said ECA International’s Regional Director for Asia Lee Quane.

“In particular, advances in road and transport infrastructure have improved access to areas in these countries that were once considered far more remote.”
Meanwhile, Singapore cemented its position as the world’s number one most liveable location for Asian expatriates since the Location Ratings Survey started in 2005.

“Unsurprisingly for many, Singapore once again remains the most liveable location in the world for expats relocating from elsewhere in East Asia,” Quane noted.

The city-state is an attractive location for Asian overseas workers due its great amenities and low crime rate, as well as its high quality education and healthcare. Another plus factor is the large expat population already residing in Singapore.

“Although many cities in Asia offer similar benefits to overseas workers, Singapore remains the top location, and it does not look like it will drop in the rankings any time soon.”

On the other hand, Hong Kong fell 12 places in the list to land at 41st spot “due to the disruption and considerable damage caused by Typhoon Mangkhut in September 2018.”

“Although there was no loss of life, Mangkhut was the most devastating storm experienced by Hong Kong. The cost of the resulting damage to buildings and infrastructure is estimated to be around US$1 billion.”

“Therefore, Hong Kong’s liveability score has decreased to reflect the difficulties caused by Typhoon Mangkhut.”
